Cattle ranchers need edge data centers to better manage herds

Cattle ranchers need edge data centers to better manage herds, says Duos Edge AI's Doug Recker.

Edge data centers are seeing rising demand from cattle ranchers, who now use drones and AI technology to manage livestock, surprising even Doug Recker, the President of Duos Edge AI, which supplies edge data centers.

“So out in Amarillo [Texas], they're big cattle farmers, right? So they're now going to drones and AI to manage their cattle,” said Recker. “Well, they can't do all this data and AI without having compute on site.”

In an interview, Recker describes installing a data center pod in Amarillo for a school district customer, only to learn that nearby cattle ranchers also have a need for more proximate compute. Duos Edge data center pods cost roughly $1 million per unit and can be installed in around four months, a massive difference in expense and project duration compared with full-scale data centers.

“I would have never guessed that in a million years I would have put a pod out in a rural area, and that cattle farmers and dairy farmers have a need for this," says Recker.

Once seen as niche infrastructure, edge data centers are now becoming a key pillar in the broader digital transformation of industries—including agriculture—making them a fast-growing and increasingly diversified asset class.
