Ireland's most pressing energy need is not more power but the ability to better manage its grid and store renewable power, says Christopher Brown, a Partner at KPMG in Ireland.
The challenge of power in Ireland has captured national attention amid the rise of the the data center industry, which has become the country's top consumer of energy. Brown points out the challenge is less the amount of power generated but the inability of the national electric grid to fully capture the renewable power generated.
Like Portugal and Spain, Ireland has "gone into the realm of scaling renewable generation ahead of the grid's ability to meaningfully store it longer than a few seconds," says Brown. "More renewable power without storage capabilities doesn't necessarily solve the problem."
Brown shares his insights in the Cool Vector episode, "Constrained by Grid and Politics, Ireland Looks for a New Era of Data Center Growth," along with Garry Connolly, Founder, Digital Infrastructure Ireland, Gary Watson, Country Manager and Director, Keppel DC REIT in Ireland, and Eugene Finn, Managing Director at CAPCON, a Dublin-based engineering company that builds water infrastructure around the world.
