'So many dependencies' can delay a data center build

A small component can hold up the entire supply chain necessary to build a data center, highlighting the risk digital infrastructure development faces from a global tariff disruption, says a data center operations expert.

Not only might the delayed delivery of a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) system hold up a data center construction project, but the scarcity of individual components that make up UPS systems, transformers and cooling gear can bring a project to a standstill, say Phillip Koblence, COO of data center company NYI. "And that's before you even get to the supply chain associated with the compute workload," says Koblence. "There are so many dependencies."

Koblence notes that more communication is needed between partners to a digital infrastructure project to prevent confusion and waste, "so that you don't have a construction crew waiting at a site that is dependent on stuff that isn't there, and you end up going over the top on cost overruns by virtue of not effectively communicating expectations up and down the value chain."

Koblence is also a founder of Nomad Futurist Foundation and an editorial advisor to Cool Vector.

Koblence shares his insights in the Cool Vector episode, "The Global Supply Chain for Data Centers in More Complicated Than You Think." The episode also includes John Wilson of Sabey Data Centers, Philbert Shih of Structure Research, Nabeel Mahmood of Nomad Futurist and David Snow of Cool Vector Media.
